Vault Solutions: One of CIOReview's Most Promising Office 365 Providers

In the January 15, 2016 edition of CIOReview we were honored and excited to be featured on the cover as Company of the Month! Vault Solutions was named in the CIOReview 20 Most Promising Office 365 Solution Providers – 2016 list for our expertise in developing new strategies for migrating archived data to Office 365.

With over nine years of experience working with Veritas Enterprise Vault and serving our customers, we’ve developed software which can move data directly from the Enterprise Vault archives to Office 365 with ease. We talked a while back about how we moved to Office 365 here at the office and there’s a reason. There are many advantages to using Office 365, one of the most significant being the unlimited amount of data that you can store in each mailbox. Whether using Archive Accelerator to move data from Enterprise Vault mailbox archives directly to mailboxes or to In-Place Archives, or to rehydrate shortcuts securely and efficiently, you have a streamlined process to what once appeared as an overwhelming challenge.

It is an honor to be recognized by CIOReview alongside other industry leaders and we’re excited to continue developing new strategies. Through test automation and improved performance testing, we’ll be working in our Microsoft Azure test environments to improve speed and functionality of our data migration and restoration products in 2016.

We have an incredible group of professionals on the Vault Solutions team, and one by one we’d like to introduce them to you! First up is Joe Famularo, our Director of Technical Support & Services.

How long have you been with Vault Solutions?
5 years 10 months

What brought you to Vault Solutions?
Vault Solutions was searching for someone who had a breadth of experience in customer support. My background assisting customers on-site and remotely, technical expertise, and commitment to always strive for a job well done seemed to fit with the opportunity open at Vault Solutions.

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of both working with and for Dave in a number of software engineering projects at Digital Equipment Corporation. This paved the way for a longstanding work relationship as well as a personal friendship that I value very much.

What do you love about what you do every day? 
I very much enjoy solving issues for our customers. Whether a simple question or in-depth technical problem, the satisfaction of providing a solution is fulfilling.

What do you do when you’re not at the office?
With my wife by my side I love enjoying the ambiance of Portsmouth and the seacoast. I enjoy simply visiting our favorite downtown coffee house, meeting friends, shopping at the local farmers market and then cooking up a storm. Yes, life’s simple pleasures mean a lot to me.

What’s a fun fact that most people don’t know about you?
One of my favorite TV shows of all time is the Andy Griffith show (1960-1968). Every show ends on a happy note in Mayberry. It puts my mind at ease and helps me to relax.

What else would you want people to know?
I’d like my customers to know that I’m here for them and strive to exceed their expectations. I’m grateful for the fine team of professionals we have at Vault Solutions and thankful that my talents contribute to the success we’ve experienced over the years.

Veritas File System Archiving: Making File System Restore Easier

Veritas Enterprise Vault File System Archiving (FSA) is a great way to help with storage management by replacing the original file in your file system with shortcuts that enable users to access the data transparently. This helps you to minimize storage costs by moving infrequently accessed files to a much less expensive storage solution, taking advantage of features like single instance storage and compression in Enterprise Vault. 

Veritas File System Archiving: Making File System Restore Easier

Over the past few years, there has been significant number of discussions about the pain points regarding storage that managers and professionals in the IT world face. According to an EMC report, 79% of respondents noted that managing storage growth was a pain point in their day to day responsibilities. Second to that was designing, deploying, and managing backup, recovery, and archive solutions at 43% in 2013-2014*.

Occasionally, because of a change in hardware or software, mergers or divestitures, or the need to conform to new policies, it becomes necessary for companies to conduct mass data restores from their archiving environment. Recently, a large global bank found that they needed to re-implement FSA in the US to address new global policies governing how they managed their data.

Depending on the amount of data to be restored, the FSAUtility, command line utility provided by Veritas, is often used. However there are a number of restrictions that people face when using FSAUtility.

  • It is single-threaded
  • It restores files to their original location rather than where the shortcuts currently reside
  • It doesn’t handle long file paths

Working with Symantec (now Veritas) to address these restrictions for those needing better options for restoring mass data, we enhanced our Archive Accelerator application to provide the ability to do mass restores of FSA data.  We created an application that:

  • Is multi-threaded
  • Restores files to their intended location (shortcuts)
  • Supports long file paths

And also:

  • Supports scheduling
  • Is able to track and retry errored items
  • Provides a full audit trail

In order to resolve the issue of  long file paths and enhance performance, we utilized a lower-level Windows API. This enabled FSA Restore to not only work with long file paths, but increased performance to an impressive rate of more than 3TB per day!
